The symbolic link effectively swaps the request.navid for the symbolic
link folder. This leads gneric nav and associated code to build content
based on the folder you are pointing to.

This is a common information architecture issue. People would argue
(myself included) that having the same content in multiple locations of
the site is more confusing than redirecting the user to the correct
location for that content.

You should be enforcing a specific IA for the site, and educating users
as to how content is distributed. By clearly indicating where you are
in the site with breadcrumbs and clear page identity confusion is
greatly reduced. Links from other areas are really useful for directing
users to the appropriate location in your IA -- you might indicate on
teh symbolic link that it is going to move them to another part of the
site visually.

But then again, that's all opinion -- your experience with actual users
may vary depending on your content, design, and your audiences activity
in the site.

It might be possible to alter the default way symbolic links work to get
the children of the symbolic link, and retain the current request.navid.

The current behaviour really reflects daemon's default approach to this
type of IA problem, and is not necessarily an unsurmountable technical
hurdle.

Hopefully that helps a little ;)
