If your project isn't due to go live until Feb you might try the Fortress beta. The security model is completely replaced with a more accessible API, including the ability to write your own userdirectory interfaces and plugins. Certainly the existing security model is long and the tooth and working with it under the hood is like sticking needles in your eyes.
