A permanent bar was considered a feature :) I think clicking on the icon to expand the tray, then select something, only to have to collapse the tray again would be a step backwards. But that's just my workflow. Perhaps we need an option similar to "switch tray position" that allows the user to "Hide Tray". Hide Tray might collapse the tray pack to a small logo tab similar to the current tray.
