Folks,

The new formtool we've designed[1] and put together[2] for images is a
thing of great nanna goat sweetness, but...

We need to decide where it should go: into a plugin, into trunk or
into the 6.0.x maintenance branch.

Strictly speaking there is no schema change, requires no specific
updater and is a change to a single formtool so by our standard
guidelines it should be eligible to go into the normal maintenance
branch for 6.0.x ie. be released as part of 6.0.9 milestone. However,
its a very significant chunk of work, will no doubt have some bugs and
will entail a definite change in behaviour for users uploading images.

If we put it in trunk, then you'll have to wait till 6.1 is released
next year before you have access, and will need to convince clients to
make a significant point upgrade to see the functionality. If we
build it into a plugin, its extra work and most installations will not
implement the plugin so we wait again for 6.1 release.

The reasons why this is an awesome change include:
- inline upload of image using "Uploadify"; the lack of image upload
progress is confusing for many users especially those uploading larger
images on slower connections
- inline options to crop images using jCrop; this is just great and
speaks for itself
- much clearer instructions to the user about exactly what will happen
- a load of little bug fixes, UI improvements and additional options

I'm inclined to see it in the 6.0.x maintenance branch, but we need
some help making it rock solid.

So what do you all think? Can you help us make the release bullet
proof?

Best regards,

GB
