Thanks to a couple of tips form Sean and Jeff I now have Solr bundled with
the plugin running as a service.
The instructions referred to in the wiki are a little more complex than
they need to be - all the config setting are already provided in the
start.bat
So all you need to do is get NSSM (the Non-Sucking Service Manager)
http://nssm.cc/
The in the comand line go to
farcry\plugins\farcrysolrpro\packages\custom\cfsolrlib\solr-server
Then run
nssm install Solr
And in the Application field, browse to start.bat, leave options blank. I
left Service name as solr

Then go and start the service.
