No, it's straight forward. Just throw it over your existing plugin. You don't want to overwrite your solr.xml, but if you do, all you need to do to fix it is just edit the config in the webtop and click save and it will re-enter the settings back in the file for you automagically. If there was anything special to do (like what you're describing), then it would be mentioned in the changelog.
The changelog can be found in a couple places like the about info within the plugin.
