Mark..
How are you today?

Risking being banned from this list for spam and self-promotion.. Here we go..

Fast Hit www.fasthit.net offers FarCry hosting. If you're ok to host your sites in Australia, any of our .MX hosting plans support FarCry. Or we can setup a re-seller management area where you can manage all your CF sites from one simple but powerful interface. We have a few web design firms who do just that. We have a number of FarCry sites working peacefully on the same shared server.

We're also about to setup a server in the US, just for FarCry web sites. If you show any interest, it will happen sooner rather than later. Here at Fast Hit we have CF developers and have solid links with other people with huge experience in FarCry. What I'm trying to say is that we'll make sure that you're looked after.

Thanks.

Hi,

I'm Web developer considering FarCry for client development. However, I am
not a host, and many of my clients are small enough that they don't host
their own sites. Also, dedicated server hosting is beyond their budgets. I
have read everything I can on this list concerning shared hosting, and
it's still confusing to me. There are lots of vague statements, but no
definitive technical steps oriented toward shared hosting, at least not in
one spot, that doesn't require learning the product just to understand if
it's feasible.

I think a site FAQ or whitepaper is in order to put this to bed. Why waste
everyone's time? Unfortunately, so far it seems that no one at Daemon
wants to speak clearly about this. Perhaps I've just missed it in past
postings, if so, my apologies, though the list is not the best place for
this IMHO. Perhaps it's just not a target for Daemon. If so, a statement
to that effect would be greatly appreciated!

Let me just recap what I've heard on this list:

U.S. Based Shared Hosting (my main interest): I've only seen mention of
http://www.paladincomputer.net/features.cfm. Sorry, but one host is not
enough, and (apologies again) this doen't seem to be the type of host I
would be comfortable using or recommending. PLEASE let me know there are
others in the US! Brendan Sisson said he would compile the list on the
site if I posted this request to the list.

"Issues" are mentioned about installing on a shared host that seem to
indicate that that each new site requires an install from from the root
which most hosts won't allow, even forcing one user to try installation by
restoring the database to the remote data source and uploading the FC
files. Since it sounds like this is NOT the intended install process, even
if it eventually does work, it sounds sloppy and error prone.

There are varied statements about multi-site successes, "no problem,
several running", etc, without any specifics as to how it was done,
whether this person was able to accomplish this without modifying the
app.cfm as discussed elsewhere, and so on.

Finally, it appears that mapping requirements are apparently a real turn
off to allowing self-configuration in shared hosting environments. Isn't
there a way to generalize the install program to automate mappings,
database replication, and folder copying so that this isn't so
objectionable in shared hosting environments?

Sorry if I'm beating a dead horse on this one. But it appears I'm not the
only one that's confused on this, so why not clear it up so we can move on
to real work?

Regards,

Mark
