...and, in fact, the complete works of prolific sci-fi author H.P. Lovecraft
enter the public domain this thursday! Might be one to submit to boingboing,
I think....

Hi all,

just a general observation, but I've just noticed (via Phil Harper's great
repository of author data at www.kingkong.demon.co.uk) that J.M. Barrie
died on the 19th of June 1937 - meaning that his body of work will enter the
public domain this year... apart, of course, from 'Peter Pan' which has a
perpetual copyright specifically written in to the CDPA 1988, with all the
proceeds going to Great Ormond St. Children's Hospital.

While I'm not suggesting that we should start a "Don't let those sick
kiddies take what's rightfully yours!" campaign to return Peter Pan to the
public domain (probably not a great PR exercise), since J.M. Barrie is a
pretty well known and liked author (with a pretty huge body of work), and
the Peter Pan thing is a pretty interesting bit of copyright trivia (even to
those who aren't lawyers or free culture geeks), perhaps we could take this
opportunity to run a few events and activities on or around the 19th of June
highlighting the value of the public domain? (in a tasteful,
not-dancing-on-his-grave sort of way, of course!)

Cheers!

Tim
