>From my perspective, the report is excellent. It can be found here:

What it does is set out a framework for understanding intellectual property issues that, unlike previous frameworks used by those in power, puts the value, both economic and civic, of the public domain at the forefront. It challenges the Labour government to reorientate their policy thinking towards the public domain and away from "knowledge as asset" thinking, which is identified as their current stance. Readers on this list might want the report to go further - to endorse a fourth model it identifies, of understanding knowledge based solely in the public domain, drawing on open source models of production. For me, however, the shift towards the public domain is positive and bodes well for Gowers.

Hi all,

I'm sure many of you have stumbled across this in your own fashion,
but this list is getting spookily quiet (or maybe it's just Halloween
approaching) so I figured I'd best post something:

"A think-tank has called for outdated copyright laws to be rewritten
to take account of new ways people listen to music, watch films and
read books..."

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/6095612.stm

Now I don't know that much about politics, but it seems to me that
this is an unexpected step forward in the right direction (i.e. an
acknowledgment of the balance necessary in copyright and related
legislation).

The IPPR think tank responsible for this report also appear to have
close ties to the Labour Party.

Anyway, I was wondering what the more political FCUK members think of
this.  Has anyone here actually managed to read the report yet?  Is it
as favorable as it seems?   What else should we be pushing for?
