Alas, my experience with Gartner's reports does not make them a
truly useful resource.

As I see it there are three problems with Gartner:

        1) They rely on popularity to select what they list.
        2) They are alway about 18 months to to 2 years behind.
        3) They use C-level understandable explanations.

These, in and of themselves, are no great sin; however, the net
result is that the risks related to potential exploits are not
accurate, nor can one be assured that best practices view they
have is current.

To give a very brief example from my consulting experience, I
approached selecting what software would go to POC stage via a
short questionnaire that I broadcast to as many vendors as I
could find easily. (Even I missed finding one possible choice.)
In this case it was about 25. From their replies I created a
scorecard and ranked the potential candidates as to fitting the
basic technical requirements.

Meanwhile another group chose 4 potential candidates based on
Gartner reports and their own exposure and knowledge of the type
of software.

The results were dismaying. Three of the 4 selected by the other
group did not meet the minimum technical requirements set out by
the client, yet they proceeded with them in any case.

Now, perhaps, you will have a better understanding why about 70%
of all technology initiatives at major companies fail.

Best,

Allen
