In essence, the processing required to encrypt and decrypt is done by the hard 
drive itself instead of the motherboard CPU, thus enhancing the overall 
performance of the computer.

This kind of things, where there is a software and hardware solution, is common 
is number of areas like RAID systems, Video processing, and Network management. 
It all situations it is a trade-off of performance, stability, simplity, and 
cost. If there are no trade-offs, then you will see one solution dominate the 
other.
