Free and open source licenses cover copyrights and not trademarks. Trademarks are required to protect a brand and the brand is valuable enough to be protected. Otherwise anyone could do a distribution that wipes off hard disks and call it Fedora. There are hundreds of different FOSS projects where the brand is protected including the Linux kernel, Apache, Mozilla Firefox and so on.
