Peter, Mark, Don, Eddie, Sarah, Jon, (cc: Fedora Developers)

On a recent Fedora call, I was nominated to try and bring the OR13 and Fedora 4
developer challenges together at PEI. By way of this email, I'm hoping to get
the OR hosts, program chairs and dev challenge coordinators to be in
communication with the Fedora Futures team. By copying the Fedora developers
lists, I hope to generate some awareness of and enthusiasm for the combined
effort.

This is an excerpt from a preconference / dev workshop proposal that we
submitted on behalf of Fedora:
As part of the Fedora Futures (FF) initiative, the FF Tech Team is rewriting
the repository for what will be Fedora Version 4. As part of the rewrite, the
FF Team invites developers from the OR community to:

- install, run and test the software in a single or multi-node environment

- run or extend the performance test harness to provide new measurements
and data visualizations

- contribute code, tests or documentation to the core repository

- enhance or develop a new module or service to complement the repository

- expose new Fedora 4 functionality in a new or existing (e.g. Hydra or
Islandora) application

A principal objective of the FF initiative is not only to give the project a
clean code base, but also one that is a easy to work productively in, and a joy
to enhance. The Fedora track of the OR13 developer’s challenge will give
developers a chance to get into the project on the ground floor while
participating in a fun and supportive team environment.

(Please Note: This is a proposal for a Fedora Futures Developers’ Challenge.
Ideally it will be run as part of the OR13 Dev Challenge. We are submitting
this as a distinct proposal to ensure this it doesn’t get lost in the shuffle.)

Eddie Shin has volunteered to be the point person for FF in order to try and
weave this strand into the greater OR Dev Challenge structure. Could we please
begin a thread or set up a call to see if we merge the two effort?

Thanks,

- Tom
