produce the expected string?
if not, your .bashrc is probably not sourced -- for starters just try
export JAVA_HOME="/usr/lib/jvm/java-6-sun"
in exactly that shell you use to install fedora later on.

i for one had once a look at ldap and i am happy there's no need to use it  
here ...
but i remember having auth issues with fedora 2.2.1 and/or 2.2.2 when  
using java6.
with java5 everything was ok -- not sure about 2.2.4 here, since i am  
still using java5.
