I wonder if the corruption may have been caused by my accidental discovery that it is possible, via unintentional mouse finger slips, to use the muradora security policies to deny the administrator edit or delete permissions to an object? (coughs in embarrasment). Anyway, I took the precaution of deleting said object from the objects directory before restoring the index!

Eek! Got an error when reindexing fedora. Actually the error may have occurred at an earlier stage, while cycling tomcat. I reindexed as fedora did not restart correctly.
