Gert, et al.

I have started fresh, installing Fedora, Solr & GSearch on a debian host.  I'm getting closer, as I can actually get to the updateIndex page now:

http://banyan:8080/fedoragsearch/rest?operation=updateIndex

However, when I click the "updateIndex createEmpty" button, I get the following message:

"createEmpty: Stop solr, remove the index dir, restart solr"

If I do as it says: stop Solr (using tomcat web manager); remove ~/solr/data/index, and restart Solr, I get the "no segments found" message (and I think: "Didn't I just tell you to create the segments?").  This also messes up my Solr installation and I have to remove ~/solr/data, create and empty ~/solr/data directory and restart Solr in order to get it working again.

At which point I'm back to square one.  Perhaps I don't have to use the "updateIndex createEmpty" button when Solr is set up this way?

Working on this theory, I tried the "updateIndex fromFoxmlFiles" button which gives no error message in the web interface (though it throws 20 warnings), but no documents are indexed (I've loaded the fedora demo objects):

Index name: DemoOnSolr Inserted number of index documents: 0 Updated number of index documents: 0 Deleted number of index documents: 0 Resulting number of index documents: 0 Number of warnings (see log): 20

When I check the catalina log, I find this: message:

Dec 1, 2010 2:48:54 PM org.apache.solr.core.SolrCore execute
INFO: [] webapp=/solr path=/update params={} status=500 QTime=2
Dec 1, 2010 2:48:54 PM org.apache.solr.common.SolrException log
SEVERE: org.apache.solr.common.SolrException: ERROR:unknown field 'PID'
...

See http://pastebin.com/A5iGQUy6 for the full java error log; I've copied only one of the "warnings" because the other 19 are identical except for the time stamp.

I've pasted my installation/config steps here so you can see what I've done and spot the errors I've made:

Any idea what I'm doing wrong?

Yes, I think you should start fresh. You may have spoiled the internal consistency of the config, when you start with one example config and then mix with files from other configs. Also, it seems that updateIndex does not find the foxml files, check repository.properties, and check the gsearch log.

Best,
Gert
