I believe the REST api is enabled by default. Essentially the web admin
interface is just a wrapper for that as far as I know. You can use that API to
add, remove, or retrieve objects and their various datastreams, etc.
Alternatively you can install FedoraGSearch or another search engine to enable
searching of objects. PIDs can be assigned automatically, this can be
customized in the configuration as to what that PID is, you can also partially
declare a PID on ingestion (like "foo") and when a record is added it will
increment for you (ie foo:1-foo:n).
Not too sure on the command line part, I know you can add, purge, and list
objects, but actually getting them or their datastreams I don't know.
Also, not exactly sure what you want to accomplish with the tree.
Deploying FC is pretty straight forward since it comes with Tomcat. Probably
just need to add a database and configure FC to use it.
I know I'm not getting to detailed into my answers, but hopefully I've given
you some starting points. Getting it up and running and playing with the web
admin is probably a good start. Also setting up fedoragsearch if you want to
search on things besides DC metadata.

Subject: [fcrepo-user] A Newbie looking for simple instruction
So my org had asked me to look into some repositories and come up with a quick
Power Point comparing various open source programs. The powers that be decided
Fedora would fit our needs. "Wonderful!" you say, but woe is me. I've been
tasked with implementing the system. Not only am I new to Fedora, I'm new to
this company/project of about 60-75 people so I really want to make some
progress. However, I'm lost and was wondering if there is a set of simple
instructions or details out there for someone who is not familiar with these
things at all.
For example, I downloaded Fedora to a test system. How do I enable the REST
API? I used the tutorial to create objects and put them in Fedora, but how do I
get them out when I need them?
Is there a way to assign PIDs automatically? Multiple team members will use
this to store documents so ideally, the system needs to assign PIDs. Once I put
objects in, can I view them on the system from command line rather than GUI?
Can I create a tree like structure for documents - start with documents,
followed by projects, followed by doc type?
I have many more questions....which is why I am looking for some very basic
instructions on setting up a repository. I'm hoping I can configure it and
modify as I progress, but for now I just need to be able to put in a few
documents and pull them out, add auto PID so others can also add docs. Any help
would be greatly appreciated.
