Seems like it may be possible to use that feature from a Java JNDI based client 
but I
haven't come across any straightforward example from a quick Google search.

Will investigate further but in the meantime, if anyone has an example of using 
this
Persistent Search feature via the Java JNDI API that they can share, it would be
appreciated.
