Never mind, I found that somehow nscd had been restarted on ths machine, 
kiling it and doing another 'chkconfig nscd off' fixed it.  I point the 
dns address on this box to the firewall, which in turn forwards things 
to vz's servers.  When I didn't even see the lights blink on the switch 
as I tapped the retry button in firefox, I knew then it was my problem.

People having trouble with vz bouncing email to me should add the word
'online' between the 'verizon', and the dot which bypasses vz's
stupid bounce rules.  I do use spamassassin too. :-)
