something you have yet to mention, do you still have commercial boot loader
on sda, or did you 'fixmbr' and remove it?
something which has not been suggested to try;
'dd if=/dev/sda of=sda.hex bs=256 count=1'
'dd if=/dev/sdb of=sdb.hex bs=256 count=1'
then use a hex editor and look at 2 files. you should see microsoft, vista,
what ever in sda.hex and grub in sdb.hex.
if you see grub in both, problem solved.
