I've seen that from time to time, and the workaround you mentioned doesn't exist in my mplayer. But that sort of thing works for *some* clips, but still has the problem of breaking some other clips that, otherwise, did work fine. The "monitoraspect" option helps a bit, for where you have clips that are okay, but mplayer hasn't figured out what your monitor is.
