For email that is reasonable.

For files it depends on your threat model. If worried about someone physically
stealing your hardware (e.g. lost laptop) than luks protects you from having
someone find remnants in scratch areas. If you are worried about other users
on the system getting at the data, then pgp would be better for that. (SELinux
could also be helpful.)
