Hmm...just curious; why didn't you just cat /dev/zero >/dev/sdc?

Most assuredly; this is 70 caliber, at least.

I would just use fdisk to delete all the partitions, then create a new one (or ones), then mkfs on the partition. I wonder if the OP did a mkfs on the raw device instead of the partition, and that's why it looks so odd.
