I'm guessing that Gmail's SSL certificate uses imap.gmail.com instead of
pop.gmail.com. Read the section on --sslcommonname in fetchmail(1).

Your error seems to point at smtp set up on your local server:
fetchmail: connection to localhost:smtp [127.0.0.1/25
<http://127.0.0.1/25>] failed: Connection refused.
fetchmail: SMTP connect to localhost failed
fetchmail: SMTP transaction error while fetching from x...@pop.gmail.com
<mailto:x...@pop.gmail.com> and delivering to SMTP host localhost
fetchmail: Query status=10 (SMTP)
Although I also see the error mentioned it retrieves the mail:
fetchmail -u slwetmore pop.gmail.com --keep --ssl
Enter password for slwetm...@pop.gmail.com:
fetchmail: Server CommonName mismatch: imap.gmail.com != pop.gmail.com
1 message for slwetmore at pop.gmail.com.
reading message slwetm...@gmail-pop.l.google.com:1 of 1 (2111 header
octets).. (39 body octets) not flushed
