FWIW, lennart guided me to the #pulseaudio on freenode where my first posting got the fix you enjoy.

given he's in germany, seems like fine response time to me, ...

while i was there, i read several articles on pulseaudio in general and glitch-free audio in speicfic. i found the info to clarify my understanding of the 'flow control' issue and get the resolution.

i dont want to start a pulseaudio debate, just point out that it wasnt PA's issue, it was a broken alsa driver.
