I suspect the i686 build of the F12 kernel update (rpm dated Nov 24 16:00 2009) may be broken. I got a bunch of error messages during the reboot, notably a missing modules.dep. After booting is complete, networking doesn't work.
When I checked the directory where modules.dep should have been I saw there are lots of other modules.* files missing: # ls -l /lib/modules/2.6.31.6-145.fc12.i686.PAE total 112 lrwxrwxrwx. 1 root root 51 2009-12-01 08:51 build -> ../../../usr/src/kernels/2.6.31-6-145.fc12.8686.PAE drwxr-xr-x. 2 root root 4096 2009-11-21 15:25 extra drwxr-xr-x. 10 root root 4096 2009-12-01 08:51 kernel -rw-r--r--. 1 root root 1682 2009-11-21 15:25 modules.block -rw-r--r--. 1 root root 92 2009-11-21 15:25 modules.drm -rw-r--r--. 1 root root 29 2009-11-21 15:25 modules.modesetting -rw-r--r--. 1 root root 1933 2009-11-21 15:25 modules.networking -rw-r--r--. 1 root root 74253 2009-11-21 15:25 modules.order lrwxrwxrwx. 1 root root 5 2009-12-01 08:51 source -> build drwxr-xr-x. 2 root root 4096 2009-11-21 15:25 updates drwxr-xr-x. 2 root root 4096 2009-12-01 08:51 vdso drwxr-xr-x. 2 root root 4096 2009-11-21 15:25 weak-updates The corresponding directory for the general release kernel is complete: # ls -l /lib/modules/2.6.31.5-127.fc12.i686.PAE total 3064 lrwxrwxrwx. 1 root root 51 2009-11-27 16:04 build -> ../../../usr/src/kernels/2.6.31.5-127.fc12.i686.PAE drwxr-xr-x. 2 root root 4096 2009-11-07 20:38 extra drwxr-xr-x. 10 root root 4096 2009-11-27 16:04 kernel -rw-r--r--. 1 root root 487583 2009-11-27 16:05 modules.alias -rw-r--r--. 1 root root 487583 2009-11-27 16:05 modules.alias.bin -rw-r--r--. 1 root root 1682 2009-11-07 20:38 modules.block -rw-r--r--. 1 root root 69 2009-11-27 16:05 modules.ccwmap -rw-r--r--. 1 root root 198070 2009-11-27 16:05 modules.dep -rw-r--r--. 1 root root 291599 2009-11-27 16:05 modules.dep.bin -rw-r--r--. 1 root root 92 2009-11-21 15:25 modules.drm -rw-r--r--. 1 root root 221 2009-11-27 16:05 modules.ieee1394map -rw-r--r--. 1 root root 218 2009-11-27 16:05 modules.inputmap -rw-r--r--. 1 root root 14788 2009-11-27 16:05 modules.isapnpmap -rw-r--r--. 1 root root 29 2009-11-07 20:38 modules.modesetting -rw-r--r--. 1 root root 1933 2009-11-07 20:38 modules.networking -rw-r--r--. 1 root root 74 2009-11-21 15:25 modules.ofmap -rw-r--r--. 1 root root 74253 2009-11-07 20:38 modules.order -rw-r--r--. 1 root root 323513 2009-11-27 16:05 modules.pcimap -rw-r--r--. 1 root root 1219 2009-11-27 16:05 modules.seriomap -rw-r--r--. 1 root root 174541 2009-11-27 16:05 modules.symbols -rw-r--r--. 1 root root 226546 2009-11-27 16:05 modules.symbols.bin -rw-r--r--. 1.root root 768172 2009-11-27 16:05 modules.usbmap lrwxrwxrwx. 1 root root 5 2009-11-27 16:04 source -> build drwxr-xr-x. 2 root root 4096 2009-11-07 20:38 updates drwxr-xr-x. 2 root root 4096 2009-12-01 08:51 vdso drwxr-xr-x. 2 root root 4096 2009-11-21 15:25 weak-updates I checked another 64-bit system updated at the same time and its new kernel appears to be complete.
