A user with root privileges (or who has configured the necessary authorizations for their user account via PolicyKit) can install malicious 3rd party software on any distribution (or operating system for that matter). Given that that thread is two years old however I don't think that particular malware purveyor has been enjoying much success with his 5cr1pt5.
