I just tried it, updating to my "test-new" package wouldn't get the epoched
"test-old" package removed:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~> rpm -qa test\*
test-old-4.2-1
test-new-1-1
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~> rpm -q --qf '%{epoch}:%{v}-%{r}\n' test-old
4:4.2-1
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~> rpm -q --obsoletes test-new
test-old <= 4.3
