Very long story, but the short answer was, yes, it was an indirect influence. Some people blew that out of proportion for a while. Needless to say, the issue's been moot for over 20 years. Phil Barker was well known in the gaming community and had a loyal group of fans and followers in the 1970s and beyond. His death is untimely and sad.
