As I've said, I like all kinds of sports. But Association Football is no more "proper" than Rugby Football (League or Union), or US (Gridiron) Football, or AFL, or Seven or Gaelic, or Canadian. Both Rugby and Association (hence the nickname "Soccer") began roughly at the same time in the form we know it. US Football is the result of two colleges in New Jersey wanting to bash each other, Rutgers and Princeton, but Rutgers played Rugby and Princeton played Association, so the two team captains got together in 1869 and cobbled together the first set of rules and US football was born on November 9th of that year in New Brunswick, NJ. Rutgers won 6-4. Then the game morphed when McGill University came down to play Harvard in Cambridge, Massachusetts in 1871, a rugby style game but played under Harvard's "House Rules," and that was the foundation of what evolved into American Football and Canadian Football. BTW, for a "proper" game, you realize that Soccer is the only football game in the world that at some point you don't touch the ball with your hands.
