I bet working out the plot was fun... at the end the world is DESTROYED and they all DIE! No subtle thoughts to leave links to the next in the series for the publisher.
Maybe I gave away how I would like to see it end although I do believe (from things I have read about tv) particularly American audiences do not like sad endings.
