I think if you let a few typos spoil your enjoyment of a book, you're probably
doing it wrong...

Subject: Re: Picked up my copy of Magicians End

I have been checking out these postings for a while now. I discovered Ray's
books as a young child, not really a 'sci-fi' fan, but I latched onto his books
due to the depth of the story, which in my opinion went far beyond the usual
wizards and dragons.
I am disappointed, though, in the recent turn of events regarding A Crown
Imperiled and now with Magician's End. I followed very closely the stream
regarding the editing error in ACI, waiting to see the news that Harper Collins
was re-stocking the shelves with a correct version. I still have not bought the
book, as it seems apparent we are expected to buy a flawed item and enjoy it
simply because 'It is Ray's book'. Sorry, Ray, I don't dig that. Tom Clancy
tried that and his books now are garbage. Every book I have read so far has
been a true work of art. Each time you come back and prove to me again you are
an amazing author. I am not saying this is necessarily a fall from grace for
your talent, but as you well know, you are only as good as your last piece of
work. I have a very high-stress and critical job, I have become very good at
what I do, but I still come to work every day knowing I have to prove it all
over again. We all need to prove it again every day. We all make mistakes, I
make mistakes. But what do we do to correct the mistakes? So far, I have seen
nothing that resembles an acceptable effort to make it right. I have also read
a lot of reviews, which chronicle a long list of grammar and spellings erros
running throughout the book. If I was looking to make a lot of money from other
people for my intellectual work, I would be putting a lot of effort into making
sure they received what they deserved.
I would love to get my copy of A Crown Imperiled, but I just get a raw feeling
when I am going to be expected to put out my money for a known flawed product.
I also was bothered when I saw you get annoyed at your fans, the people who put
you where you are. Instead of getting mad at us, why don't you stand up for us
and demand the publisher put corrected copies on the shelf? I know, it is
expensive - I am sure that is a real bummer - but that is not a 'me problem',
rather a 'you problem', and the expense should not be held by me alone.
The news that there may be a corrected version in paperback is just not good
enough, because frankly, paperbacks suck. The hardcover novel is the only way
to enjoy a book, especially one you truly love. I love the firm and solid feel
of the binding and the dust jacket is typically a work of art itself.
I am a fan, but I am a true fan, one who will tell you when it is awesome, and
when things have gone wrong.
Things have gone wrong.

Got my copy today, and enjoying every line of it.

When is Ray coming to Wellington NZ, is it ticket only?

Thanks
