I so admire the decision you made with your little ones......... Most people would not have done the same. I agree with your sentiments. Hopefully they will NEVER get sick at all, but if they do I would do the same. Make them comfortable but not put them through extreme measures. That is how I've handled my cats. I've gone through extreme measures with some of my guys when we had hopes of good results and their personality seemed able to handle it, and I've let them go when they were miserable and there was not enough hope to put them through procedures that weren't very promising.
It's different for everyone, but if you're working with a humane society (or maybe 'were' now....) you learn when to let go. It doesn't make it any easier, but you learn to balance your head more with your heart. Unfortunately there are always more who need a home when
you lose one of your own who will work his or her way right into your heart as well.
