I'm one of the novices :) Our kitten Pippin tested a faint positive on the ELISA test back in June. She will be getting her second test (IFA) on October 12th. She is 5 months and 2 weeks old.
My husband and I have four cats. Tigger and Taylor are 13 years old and are brother and sister. They had a feral mother and we rescued them at appx. 7 days of age. Bob is 8 years old. He chose us; he came to our door one day when he was about 10 weeks old. We answered an online ad for kittens and chose Pippin (but I really think she chose us!)
We took Pippin to the vet the same day we adopted her, and found out that she was positive for FeLV. I asked the vet if there was an alternative to having her put down. The vet suggested keeping her water, food and litter separate until we had her
tested a second time. However, I wondered what was going to be the alternative at that point if she tested positive again? I really panicked (cried and cried) and stayed up most of the night researching FeLV. I wasn't pleased with what I read for the most part.
And then, happily, I found this group! :) It gave me hope for Pippin's future and I started thinking maybe she could be adopted if she was positive. That lasted a few days and I realized that no way could I let her go. She was/is my baby, just like my other cats.
So, when I saw that some of the people on this list have been mixing their cats with success, I approached my husband with the idea of having Tigger, Taylor and Bob vaccinated for Feline Leukemia and letting Pippin integrate. He was all for it. So that's what we have done.
We are getting the second
test just to see if Pippin is still positive so that we can give her the care she will need. Right now Pippin is on Innova Evo and takes L-lysine. She appears to be very healthy and we hope she can throw off the virus.
