Yes, I think so. It could be that he has had to go for a while, and just couldn't make it to the box on his own, so he was holding it, and when you begin to feed him "what goes in must come out", and he HAS to go. Try placing him in the box before each feeding. You may be able to train him to "go" with a command, like dogs do. Try telling him "go potty". You can stimulate him with a warm wet washcloth on his privates while saying "go potty", in time, he may associate the command with the deed.
