I have a polydactyl cat (Siamese mix) who has one extra toe on each foot. The two nails on those two extra toes on the front paws grow towards the underside of her paw, not outwardly like a normal cat's claws. They eventually grow INTO the padding of LuLu's paws if I do not clip them about 2-4 times per year. So yes, claws can be ingrown in a feline. And yes, it is a must that I trim them. It's impossible for her to use a scratching post for these two nails. Trimming nails is just fine to me, as long as it's done right.
