Beth, have you gone to the house and called Barnaby?  Maybe he will
recognize your voice.  Recently I adopted a semi-feral kitten that escaped
outside (never open cage door outside to pet cute kitty, duh).  The woman
feeding the kitten had to come over and catch the kitten, the kitten came
to her voice.  Now kitten is inside and well-adjusted.  Maybe Barnaby is
waiting to hear your voice.  My thoughts are with Barnaby, I pray he pulls
through.
