We had a dachsund when I was a child, let's say over well over 20 years ago. lol.  He once got an unopened bag of hershey's kisses and ate them foil and all.  At that time we didn't even know about the toxicity to chocolate and were worried about all the foil and paper.  He got sick, but he made it through.  Another time he got to an unopened box of Krispy Kreme donuts (not chocolate though) and ate all dozen.  He was quite a little trouble maker.  I had him all through my childhood and college.  He died, I think the 2nd year I was teaching at 17 or 18 years old.  He was a tough one to lose.  :(

Yes, chocolate is toxic to both dogs and cats.  It can
be quite serious.  What a vet told me is the reason
you don't hear the warning against chocolate with cats
is because they generally don't LIKE chocolate - so
they don't see any chocolate poisonings because cats
aren't eating the stuff.  But if you have a cat who
actually likes it, you have to do everything in your
power to keep them away from it.  The dog too.  It's
really not good.

I saw a story on TV once about a dog who ate an entire
chocolate cake off the table - including the knife -
and the vets were more concerned about the toxicity of
the chocolate than they were about getting the knife
out of his stomach.  He swallowed it whole and didn't
puncture anything - they were able to perform surgery
to remove it.  Lucky dog. :)
