A virtual image has been added to the array of methods for running FEniCS. The latest image is available at http://fenicsproject.org/pub/virtual/fenics-latest.ova. The image can be useful in a number of scenarios, perhaps most notably in teaching and courses using FEniCS.
Some simple instructions for using the image have been added to http://fenicsproject.org/download/. It has been tested using VirtualBox. Feedback on the image is welcome. Some rough edges are still being worked on (issues are listed on the Issue Tracker at https://bitbucket.org/fenics-project/fenics-virtual). Please report any bugs or feature proposals on the Issue Tracker. The image is based on Ubuntu 14.04 and installs FEniCS 1.5 from the FEniCS PPA. The image size is 1.7GB. It uses Fluxbox as the window manager to keep the image size down. For those interested in the technical side, the image creation is scripted and automated using Packer (https://packer.io/) and VirtualBox, and can be run headless. The scripts are available at https://bitbucket.org/fenics-project/fenics-virtual. Thanks to Jack Hale and Larry Lizao for their good work on developing the image building process. Stay tuned for some new tools for running FEniCS inside Linux containers using Docker.
