Jan: No, I didn't use sudo to install hashdist or in any occasion here.

Martin: Yes, I did run the script from a location with +w permissions, e.g.
" ~/dev/hashstack/fenics/bin/python demo_poisson.py" in $HOME.
(fenics being the link to ~/.hashdist/bld/profile/..)

That's not it, either.
