Ferret is optimized for speed and therefore uses it's own file format. I assume you use Ferret to index data which is stored in your database anyway. It's of little use to backup your Ferret index since it can be rebuilt from the contents of your database. If you need to restore your database from a backup just rebuild your index afterwards.
