are you talking about ferret, or acts_as_ferret?

its no problem with ferret, with acts_as_ferret, there is a flag on
your model, see

Model.enable_ferret and Model.disable_ferret

Not sure if you can still search, but i guess that might be possible,
as this might only disable the after_save hooks .. give it a try  :)
