Major changes: * Text conversion machinery (far from the final state), used also for passing strings to and from C functions and for I/O. * A couple of conversions: - Default local encoding. - Anything that iconv provides. - UTF-8. - Most of ISO-8859-x, CP-xxxx, CP-xxx, Mac*, KOI8-R. - Generic conversion improver which uses approximations in place of unavailable characters. glibc-2.1.9x or libiconv <http://clisp.cons.org/~haible/packages-libiconv.html> is recommended. glibc-2.1.3 works but is buggy and inefficient. I haven't tried other iconv implementations than glibc-2.1.3 and libiconv. Appropriate methods for using the default local encoding on other platforms are waiting to be discovered and implemented. Here iconv and <langinfo.h> are used. Unfortunately a robust Haskell compiler for Unices should carry its own iconv implementation (e.g. libiconv) and use it in case the target system does not have a usable iconv.
