That was Ashley's original proposal, but SimonM responded in http://www.haskell.org/pipermail/glasgow-haskell-users/2001-September/002290.html http://www.haskell.org/pipermail/glasgow-haskell-users/2001-September/002304.html that the extra boxing was unsafe in GHC.
