Much of that community developed because it already existed. When the
list first started, the major authors mostly knew each other. Somehow, by
some miracle, a few of them found the list, told the others, and it
actually became a home to that community.
It happened, I believe, because there wasn't any good home yet. It was
luck and timing.

I wish I could have. Sadly, I no longer have access to the resources to
