For reference:

James> Not really, the AV_GCC_VERSION_AT_LEAST helper macro exists
James> precisely for this purpose.

You> The macro exists to avoid separate patches?

James> No, it exists to not require configure checks just to enable a
James> path for gcc/clang and another for other compilers.

Honestly, from the outside, I see nothing offensive and/or annoying in
James' comments. Maybe I am missing some context, but I see only two
straightforward technical claims.

Furthermore, I do not remember having ever observed in James' messages
the intent to be offensive or annoying.

In fact, in my eye, it is your message that seems annoying:
misunderstanding on purpose used as a sarcasm. If you were feeling
offended, it was an understandable reaction, but it can still be felt as
annoying if there was no intent to offense.

Can we please assume goodwill unless we have strong evidence otherwise?

Regards,
