If you are fine with the subtree suggestion I outlined, and nobody objects to 
it, then I would be happy to approve a corresponding PR immediately in 24-48h

Otherwise, if there is disagreement, then I think we should first identify 
exactly what the disagreement is and why.

Voting makes sense when we fail to resolve a disagreement. But at the moment I 
am not even sure that such a disagreement exists.

I have seen several people speak against submodules. I have also seen concerns 
about importing 600+ commits, and concerns about merge-heavy history. The 
question now is whether these are actual objections to a full-history subtree 
approach.

If they are real objections, then we should discuss them and understand each 
other better first. If they are not, then we can move forward

That seems faster and more productive than voting before the actual points of 
disagreement are clear.
