PR #24874 opened by michaelni URL: https://code.ffmpeg.org/FFmpeg/FFmpeg/pulls/24874 Patch URL: https://code.ffmpeg.org/FFmpeg/FFmpeg/pulls/24874.patch
This replaces the earlier version of this pull request, which rejected frames with negative linesizes. Such frames are supported now, and transfers between system memory and CUDA frames got faster on the way. ## What changes - `av_hwframe_get_transfer_buffer()` is added to libavutil. It allocates the buffers of a software frame used for a transfer to or from a hardware frames context, out of a pool kept by that context. - Frames that `av_hwframe_transfer_data()` allocates for a download come from that pool, for all hardware types. Before, every download allocated a new frame. - A hardware context type can supply the allocator of these buffers. CUDA uses `cuMemHostAlloc()`, so the device transfers directly to and from the frame instead of through a buffer of the driver. Pageable memory is still used if page-locked memory cannot be allocated, and with ffnvcodec headers that lack `cuMemHostAlloc()`. - `hwupload_cuda` gives the filter in front of it such buffers to write into. - A software frame with negative linesizes, as `vflip` produces, is transferred through a top-down copy in a transfer buffer. Before, the driver rejected it with `CUDA_ERROR_INVALID_VALUE` and the transfer failed. - `fate-hwcontext-cuda` also uploads from and downloads into bottom-up frames. ## Benchmarks RTX 5090, PCIe 4.0 x16, 10 interleaved runs per case, mean ± standard deviation of the wall time, p from Welch's t-test. Before is master at f391d256fd. ### Hardware decoding with download `ffmpeg -hwaccel cuda -i hevc.mp4 -f null -` | Size | Before | After | Change | p | |---|---|---|---|---| | 1920x1080, 3000 frames | 1.676 ± 0.033 s (1790 fps) | 1.629 ± 0.033 s (1841 fps) | -2.8% | 5e-3 | | 3840x2160, 1500 frames | 3.039 ± 0.036 s (494 fps) | 2.832 ± 0.045 s (530 fps) | -6.8% | 2e-9 | | 7680x4320, 400 frames | 12.300 ± 0.525 s (33 fps) | 3.247 ± 0.037 s (123 fps) | -73.6% | 1e-12 | Most of the 7680x4320 gain is from the pool: with the pool but pageable memory the same test ran at 112 fps, with page-locked memory at 124 fps. ### Upload and download `ffmpeg -init_hw_device cuda -filter_complex color=s=WxH:r=60,format=nv12,hwupload_cuda,hwdownload,format=nv12 -frames:v N -f null -` | Size | Before | After | Change | p | |---|---|---|---|---| | 1920x1080, 3000 frames | 2.461 ± 0.069 s (1219 fps) | 2.460 ± 0.098 s (1219 fps) | 0.0% | 0.99 | | 3840x2160, 1500 frames | 3.976 ± 0.102 s (377 fps) | 3.631 ± 0.096 s (413 fps) | -8.7% | 4e-7 | | 7680x4320, 600 frames | 6.681 ± 0.123 s (90 fps) | 5.276 ± 0.155 s (114 fps) | -21.0% | 4e-14 | ### Upload and download of bottom-up frames `ffmpeg -init_hw_device cuda -f lavfi -i color=s=WxH:r=60 -frames:v N -vf format=yuv420p,vflip,hwupload_cuda,hwdownload,format=yuv420p -f null -` | Size | Before | After | |---|---|---| | 1920x1080, 1500 frames | fails | 1.734 ± 0.020 s (865 fps) | | 3840x2160, 800 frames | fails | 2.774 ± 0.025 s (288 fps) | | 7680x4320, 300 frames | fails | 4.534 ± 0.026 s (66 fps) | The same command without `vflip` ran at 885, 338 and 83 fps, so the copy of a bottom-up frame costs nothing measurable at 1920x1080 (p = 0.37), 15% at 3840x2160 and 21% at 7680x4320. Copying a bottom-up plane with one `cuMemcpy2DAsync()` per row instead, which needs no copy on the host, was slower at every size: 235, 101 and 40 fps in this test. ### Notes on the measurements - The inputs are synthetic (`testsrc2` encoded with hevc_nvenc, `color`). - In two further runs of the decoding test, master at 3840x2160 took either about 3.0 s or about 5.7 s per run (means of 390 and 412 fps). I have not found the reason; with the pool the time was stable. - The 7680x4320 decoding result was the same in three separate runs (33 fps before, 123 to 124 fps after). - Each table uses a different pipeline and frame count, compare within a row only. ## Testing - Full FATE passes. - `fate-hwcontext-cuda` passes on the RTX 5090: 251 pixel formats, each with top-down and bottom-up frames on either side of the transfer. - Bottom-up upload and bottom-up download match the software `vflip` output for nv12, yuv420p, p010le and rgba. - The output of `-hwaccel cuda` decoding is unchanged at the three sizes. ## Not part of this - The generic `hwupload` filter is unchanged, only `hwupload_cuda` hands out transfer buffers. For other hardware types this would change the layout of the frames they upload from, which I did not test. - `hwdownload` still downloads into the buffers of its output link.
