Are you testing with or without gas-preprocessor.pl? On 10.5, I can confirm that the dylib_compatibility_version problem does not exist (it links fine), but --enable-shared incorrectly enables pic (there is a post on ffmpeg-devel explaining that this is not needed on 32bit ppc) breaking compilation of fft_altivec_s.S (also confirmed in mentioned post).
