Thanks for this reply too.
As you say, it works if -t is just before the output filename.

But IMHO, for operations of just extracting a segment the location of -t
should be irrelevant, as youre just saying "the segment begins at position
x (-ss) and goes until y (-ss + t)" so to speak.
